The problem with most date nights is that they are still conversation. You sit opposite each other and you talk, which is lovely, and which is also exactly what you have been doing at home about the dishwasher.
A couples massage solves that in a way nothing else on a date-night list does: you are together, doing something restorative, with nothing required of either of you. The talking is better afterwards.
The plan, with actual timings
- 5.40pm — arrive at the Viaduct spa. 1B/124 Customs Street West. Ten minutes early, both of you. One person arriving late shortens the treatment for both.
- 6.00pm — 90-minute couples massage. $320 for the two of you. Different treatments each if you want them — one deep tissue, one aromatherapy, same room.
- 7.35pm — out, dressed, unhurried. Do not book dinner for 7.30. Ninety minutes plus dressing plus paying is closer to an hour and fifty.
- 7.45pm — walk. Over the Te Wero Island bridge into Wynyard Quarter, or east along Princes Wharf. Fifteen minutes, flat, lit, water the whole way.
- 8.15pm — dinner. Anywhere around the Viaduct or Britomart. You will be relaxed enough that where hardly matters.
Total planning effort: one phone call. Total effect: considerably more than the sum of it.
What to book
- 60 minutes — $220 at the Viaduct, $200 at St Heliers. Enough for a full-body treatment. Right for a weeknight.
- 90 minutes — $320 Viaduct, $280 St Heliers. The one to book for an anniversary or birthday. There is time for the therapist to go back over the shoulders twice.
- 120 minutes — $430 Viaduct, $370 St Heliers. A whole evening in itself.
All prices are for two people together. The full couples massage guide covers what happens in the room, and the useful fact most couples do not ask about: you do not both have to have the same treatment.
"Book ninety, not sixty. The extra half hour is where the evening actually changes gear."

Viaduct or St Heliers for a date?
Viaduct for an evening date. It is in the middle of everything, has two couple rooms rather than one, and the walk-and-dinner part is right outside the door.
St Heliers for a daytime one. 417A Tamaki Drive, one couple room, the beach thirty seconds away, and slightly lower prices. Book further ahead — weekends go first. Our seaside spa day guide has the daytime version of this plan.
How to not get this wrong
- Book at least a week ahead for a weekend, and much further for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day or December. Two therapists and a specific room have to line up.
- Say what each of you wants when booking, including pressure preference — not on arrival.
- Mention anything medical. Pregnancy, injuries, recent surgery, blood pressure. It changes what is safe, and we would rather know in advance. Check with your doctor if you are unsure.
- Eat something small beforehand. Ninety minutes on an empty stomach then wine is a bad sequence.
- Do not surprise someone with a massage they did not want. Some people genuinely dislike being touched by strangers. A voucher lets them choose.
On that last point — gift vouchers are usually the smarter move for a surprise, and our guide to choosing one explains when to give a specific treatment and when to give a value.
Three variations, if a massage is not quite right
- The daytime version. Drive out to St Heliers on a Saturday morning, a 60-minute couple massage at $200, then the beach and a long lunch. Cheaper and considerably slower than the evening plan.
- The sauna date. The infrared sauna at St Heliers is $90 for two people for 45 minutes. It is the least expensive genuinely unusual thing on this list, and it works for people who are unsure about massage.
- The spa afternoon. Two packages booked for the same afternoon — $295 each at the Viaduct, $280 at St Heliers. Ask about availability when you book; it depends on therapists and rooms on the day.
